Why Did Reddit Citations in ChatGPT Plummet from 3.8% to a Shocking 0.5%?

Ever wonder what happens when one of the internet’s most rambunctious communities suddenly gets the cold shoulder from AI citation? Promptwatch, an AI visibility tracker, recently uncovered a jaw-dropping tumble: Reddit’s share of ChatGPT citations plunged from a solid 3.8% down to a mere 0.5% in just a week. That’s an eye-watering 86% nosedive. What triggered this sudden slide—some tweak in ChatGPT’s query routing or just a data glitch? And more importantly, does this plunge signal the end of Reddit’s golden era in AI search answers, or just a clever repositioning behind the scenes? For marketers and content strategists, this seismic shift raises critical questions about the future of “Reddit SEO” and where your brand’s AI visibility might be slipping through the cracks. Reddit might be less visible in citations today, but its real-time pulse on customer chatter and sentiment tracking remains irreplaceable—which begs the question: are citations just the surface of a deeper story? Let’s dig into what this sudden change means, how it compares to past shifts, and where your traffic might be heading next. LEARN MORE.

Promptwatch, an AI visibility tracking platform, found that Reddit held a steady 3.8% share of ChatGPT citations from July 18 through August 7, one of the largest shares of any single domain. Between August 14 and 17, that share averaged just 0.5%, an 86% decline relative to the previous period.

The company points to August 8, when it recorded a change in how ChatGPT Search fans out queries. Reddit’s share started sliding then, but the unexplained steep fall came on August 14.

Promptwatch calls the size of the drop provisional and says it can’t rule out a problem in its own data collection. OpenAI told Yahoo Tech that it doesn’t set a fixed level of visibility for individual sites, and that ChatGPT still cites Reddit.

This isn’t the first time. Our study of more than 230,000 prompts tracked a similar collapse a year ago, when ChatGPT’s Reddit citations fell from about 60% of responses in early August 2025 to roughly 10% by mid-September. Kevin Indig attributed that one to Google removing its num=100 search parameter, not to anything OpenAI did.

Reddit still matters, even if citations don’t

For brands that have dealt with unflattering Reddit threads surfacing in ChatGPT responses, a smaller Reddit footprint lowers that exposure. For teams that leaned into “Reddit SEO” as a fast route to visibility on ChatGPT, the payoff from that channel just got a lot less predictable.

It’s too early to call 0.5% Reddit’s new normal in ChatGPT. Reddit’s citation share also fell in Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode over the same period, by 11% and 31%. Both are far shallower than the ChatGPT drop, so this one looks concentrated rather than spread across AI platforms.

There’s also an open question of whether Reddit has simply shifted earlier in ChatGPT’s process, used to help the model identify brands or topics before it moves on to more scoped searches, rather than disappearing from the pipeline entirely.

Even with citations down, Reddit remains one of the few places marketers get direct, unfiltered access to how customers talk about products and competitors. Reddit’s value for research and sentiment tracking hasn’t changed, only its current visibility inside ChatGPT’s answers has.

Reddit’s chief communications officer, Adam Collins, put it the same way: “For communicators, Reddit’s value is in the real conversations that people are having about your brand today, not where it surfaces tomorrow.”

Track where that visibility is going

If Reddit is losing ground in ChatGPT’s answers, the traffic that used to flow through those citations may be shifting elsewhere. Semrush can help you figure out whether that’s your site, a competitor’s, or a different community platform picking up the slack.
