July 1 marks the final day of New York State’s Essential Plan 200-250, available to those to those who access healthcare through the New York State marketplace and who earn 200-250% above the federal poverty limit.

For those who are impacted by the loss of this program, you may be able to enroll in a Qualified Health Plan between now and August 30. Tax credits may also be available to those who qualify, helping to lower the cost of monthly premiums. Coverage through the Qualified Health Plan will begin retroactively on July 1, meaning any healthcare expenses created in this period will be applied under the plan.

Here’s what to do if you’re affected by the loss of this coverage:

  • Review the plans available via the New York State Marketplace.
  • Update your estimated 2026 income to determine your eligibility for each and ability to gain financial assistance.
  • Compare Qualified Health Plans, keeping in mind the monthly premiums, deductibles, prescription coverage, and out-of-pocket costs.
  • Keep your financial records up-to-date to avoid any additional costs when filing taxes.

The Freelancers Union also offers health plans via our partners at Solo, Opolis, and Galileo. One of these plans, built with freelancers in mind, may be exactly what you’re looking for. Read more, get a quote, and email us at membership@freelancersunion.org with any questions.
