Google is now powering some of the responses you see in AI Mode using Gemini 3. We expected this to happen when Google announced Gemini 3 last week, and now it is live for some searchers in Google Search.
Nick Fox, Google’s SVP of Knowledge and Information, wrote on X:
“The rollout of Gemini 3 in Search continues! We’ve just shipped intelligent automatic model routing to Gemini 3 Pro for your toughest questions in AI Mode.”
Note, in a previous post, Fox said this was for both AI Overviews and AI Mode but updated his post to remove AI Overviews. The previous post was here and said, “The rollout of Gemini 3 in Search continues! We’ve just shipped intelligent automatic model routing to Gemini 3 Pro for your toughest questions in AI Overviews and AI Mode.”
Who sees it. “Currently available for Google AI Pro & Ultra subs in the U.S.,” Nick Fox added. You will know if you have it, if you have an option to select it from the carrot menu in the AI Mode tab:

Google did announce this. From a Nov. 18 blog post by Google’s Head of Search Liz Reid (Google Search with Gemini 3: Our most intelligent search yet):
- “And in the coming weeks, we’re also enhancing our automatic model selection in Search with Gemini 3. This means Search will intelligently route your most challenging questions in AI Mode and AI Overviews to this frontier model.”
Gemini 3. Gemini 3 was introduced on November 18, 2025 where Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai said “And now we’re introducing Gemini 3, our most intelligent model, that combines all of Gemini’s capabilities together so you can bring any idea to life.”
Why we care. Some may notice more visual and detailed results in AI Mode now, if they are subscribers to AI Pro and Ultra in the U.S. So if you see different responses, maybe more visual and detailed responses, it might be AI Mode and AI Overviews powered by Gemini 3.
Ultimately, all the AI responses will be powered by Gemini 3, until Google releases a new update for Gemini and those upgrades are added to Google Search.
